ShaneCohquhoun125Shane Colquhoun’s arts management career includes positions within government and in the arts sector including General Manager roles with Western Australia’s Deckchair Theatre (1987-89), West Australian Ballet (1992-96) and most recently Black Swan State Theatre Company (2009-14).  This followed Shane’s successful career as a professional dancer overseas and in Australia.

As General Manager of Black Swan Theatre Company, working in collaboration with Artistic Director Kate Cherry, Shane was responsible for the successful relocation of Black Swan to the new State Theatre Centre of WA in 2011 and positioning it as a national leader, collaborator and innovator in the arts.

For a decade, he worked at the WA Department of Culture and the Arts in a range of senior roles, including Director Arts Funding and Development and extended periods as Acting Executive Director of the new Development & Strategy Directorate.  For 16 months in the lead up to the 2005 State General Election, Shane was seconded to the Minister for Culture and the Arts as Policy Advisor.  This extensive experience in government ensures he has a clear understanding of the inner workings of the political and departmental functions of government.

As a freelance arts manager from 1996 – 2000, consulting and working with a range of Western Australian arts organisations and project groups including, Buzz Dance Theatre, West Australian Ballet, Country Arts WA, Perth Theatre Company, PICA, City of Perth, ArtsWA, Loaded, skadada, Danza Viva Spanish Dance Company and the Australian Dancers Company, Shane completed a variety of leadership, project management, marketing, producing and locum roles.

He was the National President of the Australian Dance Council for six years until 2006 and until the end of 1997 was the inaugural Chairperson of the Australia Council for the Arts’ Dance Board, a position he held for three and a half years.

Shane is currently a Board member of the WA Chamber of Arts & Culture, Country Arts WA and the Blue Room Theatre. He is also a part-time lecturer in Arts Management at the WA Academy of Performing Arts.

Shane is a consultant in the arts sector in Western Australia contributing his skills and many years of experience to ensure the arts continue to play an important part in a vibrant Western Australia.
